This groundbreaking Obie-winning Off-Broadway smash also won multiple awards for its hit film adaptation. It tells the story of “internationally ignored song-stylist” Hedwig Schmidt, a fourth-wall smashing East German rock 'n' roll goddess who also happens to be the victim of a botched sex-change operation, which has left her with just “an angry inch.” Originally produced in Tucson by Etcetera at Live Theatre Workshop, the 2009 Arizona Daily Star MAC Award-Winning production (Best Musical) and nominee for Best Actor (Christopher Johnson) and Best Actress (Dani Dryer) returns courtesy of The Bastard (Theatre) as it's inaugural production.

“HEDWIG & THE ANGRY INCH brings theater alive with the pounding sounds of rock 'n' roll and the funny sad voicing of a painful past…it is also an adult, thought-provoking musical about the quest for individuality…the kind of Rocky Horror Picture Show-style event that may inspire a rabid cult following.”
-The New York Times

“In the whole long, sorry history of rock musicals, HEDWIG & THE ANGRY INCH is the first one that truly rocks.”
-Rolling Stone

David Lane (Music Direction)

Picture
David Lane is a composer of music and words who normally finds himself working on projects of his own creation with a local audience and an always growing scope. These include his work co-founding, co-writing for, and co-singing for the musical group Banquets, his work as the solo musician Madame Zero, and additional fiction, poetry and film work. Most recently, his first musical is being recorded and prepared for pitching and his novella THE CHANGING CALENDAR OF PALAISE is out in the press market. HEDWIG has been a centrally influential work for David, helping him develop his thoughts about what creates who we are, how our sources of creation inspire our own, and the potential for our creations to unassumingly become something we never intended. As Sondheim wrote and many have sung, “It's the ripple not the sea. / Not the building but the beam.”
